Abstract

This paper recognizes the complex interplay of factors that influences parenting styles and child development. The attitudes, feelings, thoughts, and general behaviours of children will reflect the emotional climate prevailing in their homes. The more the home climate is emotionally sterile, frustrating and hostile to the needs of children the more likely it is reflected in the appearance and behaviours of the children. The uncertainty of what comes next has a long term negative effects of the children’s present and future lives. It is therefore the duties of the parents to provide for the physical maintenance of the child, offers him his first and most continuing social contacts, give him affection and other emotional satisfaction, teaches him most of the social requirement of his behaviour. It was recommended that parents should provide emotional supports to their children. They should be good role models for their children to emulate. Parents should also adopt effective parenting style that will enhance their children’s self-esteem and promotes good behaviours in them.
